Jiashan Research Institute of New Materials, SHU (abbreviated as Shangshanyuan, IAM) is jointly established by Jiashan County People's Government and Shanghai University. Officially registered as a public institution legal entity on April 25, 2021, it occupies a total area of 110 mu (approximately 18 acres). IAM adheres to the "Four Orientations" of scientific research and follows the "material production – component manufacturing – service evaluation" R&D paradigm to continuously carry out innovative materials research and development work. It aims to establish itself as a world-class platform for industrial technology research and education in high-end fundamental components and materials, while establishing a high-level R&D institution focused on high-performance steel materials, notably fastener and bearing steel.
Currently, IAM has established a high-level R&D team and built a diversified collaborative expert think tank system comprising "Shanghai University materials master team + industry senior experts + foreign technical experts." It has been recognized as a Jiaxing Key Laboratory, a Jiaxing New R&D Institution, a Popular Science Education Base of the Chinese Metals Society, and a Zhejiang Province New R&D Institution. It was selected as one of the first national "Sci-Tech China" Innovation Bases and became a base of the "National Key Laboratory for Nuclear Power Key Materials."
IAM primarily conducts R&D work in four areas: the preparation and application of new iron with broad applicability and large-scale use, the upgrading and greening of carbon steel, the strengthening and toughening of low-micro alloy steel, and the high-performance enhancement of special steel. Significant breakthroughs have been achieved, including technologies for rare-earth corrosion-resistant carbon steel with Chinese characteristics, high-strength and high-toughness low-alloy steel technology, continuous casting production technology for medium-to-high carbon and medium-to-high alloy steel, production process equipment and product technology for ultra-high purity iron, and full-spectrum fastener material technology for grades 8.8 to 19.8.
Additionally, IAM has an analysis and testing center covering an area of 4,500 m², equipped with over 30 advanced instruments and devices valued at more than 30 million RMB. The center has obtained laboratory accreditation from the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) and possesses comprehensive testing capabilities, including sample processing, physicochemical analysis, mechanical performance testing, corrosion resistance evaluation, fatigue performance testing, and failure analysis.
